The customer brief was to design a replacement battery pack for a 2-way radio used by emergency services. The customer did not want to develop a separate battery charger solution. The end result was a replacement battery pack making use of Li-Ion cells with the charging circuit internal to the battery pack. The radio was therefore very easy to charge directly from any 12V source including a vehicle cigarette lighter. |

Eclipse is a flower vase conceptualised and designed by local architect Cobus van den Berg. Skeg assisted in the design-development process and production of a prototype unit. This project shows off the use of CAD modeling and prototyping techniques to create functional art. Surface modeling enabled us to create a flowing outer surface for the reflective qualities of investment casting materials. The vase was machined to maintain the fairness of the large smooth surfaces and finished by hand. |

Finite element analysis using Pro/E Mechanica was used to optimize the design for durability and stiffness. |

The volumes needed for this project (300 units per year) allowed us to do short run manufacturing in silicon tooling at a fraction of conventional mass production capital requirements. |

Two types of RFID tags had to be encapsulated in a material that does not degas in a vacuum. These tags were to be used to locate items in NASA's clean rooms and in space. The material specified was basically impossible to process with any standard equipment and Skeg was approached to use prototyping techniques that we have developed to encapsulate the tags. 3000 tags were encapsulated in 6 weeks maintaining full RF function. The customer has received numerous awards for this project. |
