Industrial Design
The bag of liquid would be placed inside the container and on closing the lid, with the tap in place, the tap would pierce the bag and the liquid would be ready to use.
The challenge in this design was to accommodate different bag sizes, even if a bag was labeled as 1 liter, the air content was not the same in all bags. This meant there was a lot of development needed to determine the optimum position for the lock clips and also to achieve the right pressure on the bag in order to pierce it successfully.
Prototyping
Prototypes were 3D printed and modified by hand to optimise the bag piercing mechanism. Once this iterative process was completed the changes were updated in CAD and the parts replicated with silicone tooling and vacuum casting processes.
