Freeplay - Indigo Lantern

The Freeplay Indigo lantern is a self-powered multiple LED lantern. Freeplay make extensive use of fully working, fully cosmetic prototypes to generate sales before commissioning any tooling.

Prototyping
This prototyping exercise brought together a lot of different methods for manufacturing prototype parts. The gears and alternator were machined in engineering plastics for strength and performance. The lens was machined in acrylic, polished and used as a master for silicone tooling and vacuum casting. Reflectors were cast and metalized. PCB's were assembled by hand and the rest of the parts 3D printed and vacuum cast. The internal heat sink was formed over a die manufactured on the machining centre.

Freeplay commissioned tooling from this project after successfully using the prototypes to generate sales.
