Product Development

AMC – Audio Therm

AMC approached Skeg to develop and manufacture a Temperature Alarm Unit (Audio Therm) for their range. The product fits onto the cookware lid and when the cookware reaches a preset temperature, the unit sounds an alarm. Skeg did the design, electronic development, prototyping and are currently running manufacturing for this product.

Industrial Design
The design of the unit needed to speak the same language as the AMC family of products. The design was kept simple with by using uncomplicated styling with crisp lines, even using the split line to echo this. Keeping the product environment in consideration, unnecessary cavities were avoided to make cleaning easy.

Electronic Development
This design for a simple, optically triggered piezoelectric alarm, encompassed the entire electronic development cycle in-house, from testing of optical concepts through to hardware and firmware reliability testing. Ultimately resulting in the outsourcing and management of manufacture, providing quality control test equipment and design updates to further reduce manufacture cost and increase reliability.

Prototyping
CAD files generated during the design phase were used to 3D print the parts. These parts were cosmetically finished and used as masters for silicone tooling and vacuum casting. The finished prototypes were used to test the design after which the design was updated and issued for production.

Manufacturing
The manufacturing process involved managing injection moulding of plastic parts, tampo printing, electronics, software installations and pamphlet printing. Skeg assembles all the components of the unit in-house.
